Ra.One: Review

The Story:
Ra.one is about a game developer who creates a game "Jismein villain kabhi nahi haarega" to please his son. The villain Ra.One somehow comes out of the game, creates havoc until G.one, Good One comes and the epic battle follows.

The Good:
The idea of making a superhero movie itself is quite novel in India. We hardly see a superhero movie with nice VFX, acting, marketing and box office collections. Rajnikanth starrer ROBOT and Hrithik's Krrish are other notable movies in this category with Abhishek Bhachchan's super-dud Drona.
The movie scores very well on the VFX front with the graphics matching top-notch Hollywood counterparts like Transformers, HarryPotter series and others. Some of the battle scenes, like the first face-off between Ra.one and G.one in a car parking look very good on-screen and were applauded by the audience. Also the scene in which Ra.one forms through cubes is the epitome of the hardwork put into this movie regarding graphics. In the acting department, all three major actors, ShahRukh, Kareena and Arjun Rampal have done a nice job with the guy playing SRK's son also doing good job. The music of the movie had already become very popular before the movie released and are a nice addition to the movie. SRK roped in Akon to sing two songs in the film and both of them are ranked pretty high on most Music Charts. In the good category, I would congratulate Ra.one team on the marketing front as the movie created so much hype before it's release that it seemed as if it is the last movie releasing this year.

The bad:
The movie fails to convince the audience on the logical front. Questions like, how the characters could come out of the game, how Ra.one couldn't be killed for the first time, among many other things are left unanswered. The boy who played SRK's son might have done a good job but it would have been better if they had taken a BOY to play that role. All through the movie it appeared as if a girl with bobcut with the dubbing by someone else is doing that role. The emotional element of the movie was also overdone a little and at one point it felt as if you are watching some typical saas-bahu soap. The movie was good on VFX department but the 3-d effect was still not eye-popping. Most of the scenes appeared as if in plain 2D with very little depth in them. I would also blame some part of this non-3D-ness to the cinema hall in which i saw the movie as the glasses provided were not good at all. Most of the times, we were watching the movie with one eye closed or the glasses off. But still, this is one area where Indian movies and cinema halls need to improve to provide a better experience to the audience. Last of all, i would also mention the same thing I mentioned in the good category- marketing. The movie was marketed so well and so much the people had over expectations with the movies and even a slight below par experience made them feel robbed.

The verdict:
The movie, instead of some negative points, is a very good one with a good H.A.R.T and moral for the audience. A very good watch for kids and family as a whole.

The Rating:
  * * * 1/2 out of 5.
